Our story

A small kitchen named for two words of thanks

Khob Khun is a family-run Thai restaurant. We cook the food we make for each other at home: curries built on pastes we pound ourselves, noodles tossed hard in a smoking wok, salads mixed at the mortar just before they go out.

We keep the menu short so every dish can be cooked to order. If you’d like it hotter, milder, or without something, tell us and we’ll cook it your way.

ขอบคุณ khob khun means thank you. We say it to everyone who eats with us, and we mean it.

Thai food

It’s all about balance

A good Thai dish is never just one thing. Each plate weighs four tastes against each other, then lifts them with handfuls of fresh herbs.

  1. Sweet

Palm sugar and coconut cream round off the heat and the sourness.

  2. Sour

Fresh lime and tamarind keep every plate bright.

  3. Salty

Fish sauce and shrimp paste bring the depth that salt brings elsewhere.

  4. Spicy

Fresh and dried chillies, used for flavour as much as for heat.

Fresh herbs, every day

Lemongrass, galangal, makrut lime leaf, Thai basil and coriander root are the backbone of our pastes and broths. They go in fresh, which is why a curry here smells of the herbs before it tastes of the chilli.

From across Thailand

Central
Green curry, tom yum and pad Thai: the cooking of Bangkok and the central plains, rich with coconut and herbs.
Isan, the north-east
Som tum and other sharp, lime-bright salads, pounded to order in a clay mortar.
The south
Massaman, a gently spiced curry with roots in the south’s Muslim kitchens, slow-cooked with potato and peanut.
